ABYSS
Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Lassai is set to unveil their highly anticipated project, ABYSS, a daring exploration of Black queer stories, identity, and transformation. Releasing on January 18, 2025, ABYSS represents a raw and gritty journey through sexuality, desire, and escape. The project, a “younger sibling” to Lassai’s critically acclaimed vampire visual EP IMMORTAL (2022), pushes boundaries with its bold experimentation and storytelling.
Rooted in alternative R&B and Gosel while drawing inspiration from drum & bass and club sounds, ABYSS reflects Lassai’s experiences after moving to NYC from Chicago. “It’s the forbidden fruit,” Lassai shares. “It’s the antithesis of mainstream pop/R&B and deeply connected to sounds that influenced me early in life. “ABYSS” is primitive and tailored for Raves/Clubs around the world. After three years of writing and refining, I’m ready to share this personal project with the world.”
Lassai cites artists like Kelela, Ten City, and Luther Vandross as influences, aiming to inspire, empower, and entertain Black queer and trans individuals. The release follows a year of consistent single drops throughout 2024, showcasing their commitment to creativity and evolution.
Lassai’s artistry extends beyond music. As a performer in the national tour of Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations, they’ve proven their dynamic talent in acting. Represented by Gray Talent Group, Lassai masterfully weaves their passions for music and theatre to tell powerful stories that resonate deeply.
